Should I use an Hdmi cable from my cable box to my new 46″ 1080p lcd?
I already use a digital audio cable from the cable box to my surround system. Will the Hdmi take away audio from the digital audio cable? Does it share or split the audio signal? Should I just use component cables?

No, HDMI will not defeat the signal from the optical digital cable. The same signal is split between the digital and HDMI, so you shouldn’t have any problems. Just turn your TV on mute when you want to use the stereo, if it bothers you that much.
You can use component cables but for the stations that have 1080P won’t be sent to your TV in 1080P because component won’t go past 1080i in this when HDMI will give the best picture possible and HDMI will not mess with sound for your surround system, for that if your TV has optic cable out and your surround has optic cable input that would be the way to go or even if your player has optic cable out you can connect it to surround system the optic cable will like HDMI give the best Performance for you.And you can either leave sound on TV when your surround is being used or just turn sound off.
