SMPTE and the THX Certification Standards
The Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers (SMPTE) recommends that the screen size for home theater use should occupy a 30 degrees field of view – in the horizontal plan – for the audience. Alternatively, the ideal TV viewing distance should be such that the screen width occupies an angle of 30 degrees from the viewing position. This corresponds to a viewing distance that is 1.9 times the screen width.
This 30-degree viewing angle has been accepted by many as the standard in home theater design and motion picture viewing.
THX Certification:
The THX certification standard specifies a range rather than a single optimum position. THX requires that the back row of seats should have at least a 26 degrees viewing angle and while the nearest seating position should correspond to an angle of view of 36 degrees.
It is believed that within these viewing angle limitations, the viewer will enjoy a more immersive viewing experience. These subtended angles correspond to a TV viewing distance that varies between 2.2 and 1.54 times the screen width.
12.5 feet is a solid distance to be away from the set. I recommend going as big as you can afford at that size. So worry about what your budget is, really lock that down. Then look to how big you can go with a top tier set in that price (be willing to go down a size for a better TV rather than up a size for a weaker one).
If you go Plasma, Panasonic hands down. At those sizes there really is no one better to consider. You will get a good price and great image quality bang for the buck from Panasonic. Samsung and LG are okay as well, but neither focus on Plasma technology like Panasonic does.
If you go LCD, Samsung and Sony are your go to choices. Both brands provide really great options. I would look towards a 1080p 120Hz LCD though. So you will have to shell out some $. So I would actually recommend Plasma over LCD for both image quality and price. Sharp Aquos, LG, and Toshiba are also worthwhile considerations in the LCD market too.
Right now at Best Buy, with those sizes,
LCD (in order of best quality, best listed first)
Samsung UN46B6000 – $2100 (on sale)
Samsung UN40B6000V – $1500 (on sale)
Sony KDL-40XBR9 – $1700 (on sale)
Samsung LN46B640 – $1500 (on sale)
Sony KDL-46V5100 – $1400 (on sale)
Panasonic TC-L42U12 – $800 (on sale)
Sharp Aquos LC46D85U – $1200
Plasma (both sets rock, pick your size/budget)
Panasonic TC-P42U1 – $900
Panasonic TC-P50S1 – $1200 (on sale)
- the 50″ S1 at that price might be the best TV deal at Best Buy right now
But, if you can go up $100, the TC-P50G10 is $1300 on sale. That is about as good as you’ll get in TVs period. Its a Panasonic Plasma. Its a G10 series, which is the flagship series. Its just outright amazing.
A simple rule is 2*Diagonal/10 (in feet)
40″ -> about 8 feet
46″ -> about 9.2 feet
There are some factors that have to consider before you purchase your TV.
1. First of all you have to now the TV distance – 12.5ft
2. What kind of TV signal are you going to watch on your TV
2.1 SDTV ( this is the traditional air TV signal that we all have from many, many years)
2.2 DVD
2.3 HDTV ( 720p, 1080i, 1080p ) – this is the signal that all of us already have or will have shortly
2.4 Bluray, HD-DVD, HBox, PS3
3. What is your favorite place in the movie theatre
first rows, middle rows, last rows
4. What is your technology Plasma or LCD
4.1 LCD
4.2 Plasma
The bottom line:
Lets say that your profile is:
12.5 ft
HDTV, Bluray, HD-DVD, PS3, HBox
middle rows
LCD
Take 46″ or 50″.
There is a tell: Most of the persons regret that they have bought a smaller TV set than bigger. So my advice is to jump to 50″ set.
